Eyetech announces new Amiga model
by hesdeadjim on 10/12/2004 01:50 PM
Eyetech does serious business.

We just came back from China, where we have been visiting the Smart Terminal Developer (STD) Conference held by MAI Inc, and we have sphincter-paralysingly exciting news to bring forward. In essence, Eyetech Group Ltd, designers and makers of the modern AMIGA computer, will introduce their new line of personal computers at the Amiga Meeting in Bad Bramsted this October.

We know that Amiga fans worldwide were expecting a lot of different things like a G5-based Amiga, working DMA capabilities, on-board sound, Gigabit-Ethernet, and other features but Eyetech, however, seems to have fooled them all.

At the banquet, Alan Redhouse, CEO of Eyetech Group Ltd. and designer of the preceding AmigaOne line of computers, gave a small speech that earned him standing ovations and resulted in him being lifted and thrown in the air by an uncountable number of CEOs of other high-ranked companies.

We caught Alan Redhouse on his way back from the STD conference, having been required to go there after visiting some 'friends' in Bangkok earlier. "We have decided to drop the Micro 'AmigaOne' altogether to be able to concentrate on a totally new machine," said Alan, as we grilled him. "We call it the 'Pegasos'."

In his speech, he described that the new AMIGA computer reportedly will have a 7447 G4 CPU running at 1Ghz, a Marvell northbridge, 1 x 100/10 MBit and 1 x 1 Gigabit eithernet with the option to upgrade to a second GigE port, DDR memory bus, 3 firewire ports (1 internal), on-board AC97 sound, a new operating system called "MorphDOS", and a list price of £590.00. "We are confident that you've never seen a computer like this before," said Redhouse.

Attending developers were quick to point out that Genesi, a small insignificant Luxembourg based computer manufacturer, also sells a 'Pegasos' computer with 'similar' (exact same) specifications. We went to Alan with our concerns.

"Oh God, not that overpriced, low-memory bandwidth piece of vaporware by these sourcecode stealing wannabe Amigans," Redhouse responded. "And anyway, we thought of it first."

As usual, Eyetech will offer a selfless upgrade program for all existing Amiga owners. To upgrade, customers are supposed to simply send in their 'I Am Club Amiga' coupon along with £100 for postage and handling. Upon receipt of the coupon and the £100, Eyetech will then mail them a brand new Pegasos, and arrange for someone to pick up the old board and take it to landfill.

Chinese True Amigans
Chinese True Amigans
Chinese True Amigans standing outside the hotel where the show took place and who saw the speech at a big screen could be heard inside, cheerfully shouting out pure excitement upon these bright prospects. They shouted so loudly that several had to be executed by Chinese People's Army to keep the Glorious Peace.

"It is the best motherboard ever designed by Eyetech and the best motherboard ever in the Amiga Market," said Mike Bouma, top-rated Amiga freelance journalist and critical observer of the Amiga market.

The new machines, after they are officially announced at the Amiga Meeting, are scheduled to ship 'in two weeks'. Amigaworld.net officials were quick to point out that this might not actually mean two weeks, but could mean working weeks, or weeks with no holiday days, Chinese weeks, or even OS4 development weeks (1 OS4 week = 3 real months), but beyond that no details were given.

Even more amazingly, to add to the announcement of the 'Pegasos', Eyetech hinted at a completely new marketing strategy. This includes commercials being shown at high profile events such as the Superbowl and the next FIFA Soccer World Cup. These TV commercials (rumoured to be directed by Steven Spielberg) will also air daily on all major television stations in Europe and Asia.

There's more! The announcement contained its own little sensation because Eyetech was able to employ none other than the Swedish Pippi Langstrumpf Appreciation Folk Singers Band who will compose a special Polka (the title is rumoured to be 'Reg on me Zalb') just for the TV spots. Accompanying this music will be 'mind-blowing graphics' which were entirely produced on a Silicon Graphics workstation with an 'Amiga' sticker on its front panel.

We'll keep you updated.
