OS4: The Embedded OS of the Future!
by samuraijack on 10/28/2005 11:03 PM
20 years after the Amiga Operating System was first unveiled to the public it is returning, in a manner of speaking, thanks to a joint effort by Hyperion Entertainment VOF. Alone.

TEH RAEL OS
Computing can be fun again.
Even without games.
Or apps.
20 years after the Amiga Operating System was first unveiled to the public it is returning, from radically different developers, thanks to a a joint effort overseen by Amiga Inc. and actually all done by Hyperion Entertainment VOF. This new version of the infamous OS takes all the features that few software houses used in the original Amigas, and updates them with few of the advantages required for cross platform 21st Century computing devices of all sorts. From desktop computers to mobile hardware, you can be sure AmigaOS 4.0 probably won't be allowed to run on them for one reason or another. AmigaOS 4.0 can provide fast, responsive multimedia displays even on low-end hardware such as kiosks or STBs. Unfortunately you have to deal with Amiga Inc. who will never give you a license.

Whether you are one of the thousands of dedicated "enthusiasts" for the platform or an ex-user looking for a cheap laugh as he sees all the features he's grown to rely on missing, if you are completely new to the Amiga experience or a potential and naive OEM client considering the deployment of AmigaOS 4.0 on your own hardware, we hope you'll find plenty in this website to really make you realise that some embedded Linux is probably the better choice.

Feature Spotlight

"KISS MY ASS"
Good natured developers
make coding a joy
What you can expect from this fine OS:

Shared Memory Address Space

One of the most powerful features of AmigaOS is the fact that it doesn't have any kind of virtual machine separation between programs. Unlike other slow Operating Systems, AmigaOS 4.0 does not have any useful resource tracking or protected memory, resulting in a very fast user experience. If one program crashes, it will probably cause AmigaOS 4.0 to reboot, losing all your data. This makes AmigaOS 4.0 ideal for passenger jet navigation, life support machines, and nuclear reactor control applications.

Round Robin Multitasking - A Blast From the Past!

What always made AmigaOS 4.0 special was its multitasking. Utilizing a multitasking with a set quantum slice, no "nice" values, and a inflexible priorities system that will starve transput based tasks of CPU time, AmigaOS 4.0 will mean whatever task has the highest priority will get almost uninterrupted time on the CPU, even at the detriment of other tasks. Powerful Linux feedback scheduling? Not here - AmigaOS 4.0 will make sure that no program can ever have to compete with inetd services or any other running tasks.

Fast, Small, Well Designed Applications

Want a modern, standards capable browser or an IPv6 TCP/IP stack? Well, look to our competitors with their bloated Operating Systems. AmigaOS 4.0 preserves speed and usability by not including such needless things. Need a word processor? Use WordsWorth, a true classic from the 90s, and forget Word. Into image manipulation? The 8 bit limited package PPaint is right up your alley. IBrowse and AWeb allow you to navigate the internet with no chance of falling prey to adware or exploits, since it has no Java, CSS and only limited JavaScript compatibility. Preserve that great 80s look and feel with AmigaOS 4.0.

Screen Dragging!

Amiga was always well known for it's killer feature: screen dragging. Although AmigaOS 4.0 doesn't support multi-monitor setups, TV-out, or multithreading, but we're sure the ability to drag screens up and down and see what's behind is much more useful. So far this has never been done on any other Operating System. Not one.

8 bit Icons

Eyes insulted by the confusion of truecolor icons on other platforms? AmigaOS 4.0 compensates by limiting icons to 256 colors. Yes, that's 256 colors. Color-blind users are well catered for.

Numerous and skilled Amiga community

Numbering in the middle to even high hundreds, AmigaOS 4.0's userbase are highly skilled and motivated. From talented hardware hackers like "Helgis" to almost a score of people who can recompile simple Linux applications using wrapper linklibs, we're sure that any AmigaOS 4.0 user will not lack for those little games where you shift blocks around with a little penguin.

Brand Name and Boing Ball Symbolism

Having the Amiga name means that AmigaOS 4.0 holds the absolute loyality of its fanbase. This makes the fanbase very profitable with the minimum of effort or expenditure by anyone who sells Amiga branded goods. A dedicated sales site, AmigaWorld.net is superb at marketing these items while at the same time its diligent moderator staff will remove any negative comments that could impact sales. Perfect for the company that
cannot exist in a climate of fair competition.

No commercial Software

Other Operating Systems have been ruined by failing to provide enough commercial software to its users. AmigaOS 4.0 breaks through this limitation by providing NO commercial software at all. Any software comes entirely from the userbase, or is ported by Hyperion Entertainment VOF, reducing the need to force users to choose from a bewildering range of software.

Closed source

Unlike many Unix interpretations, AmigaOS 4.0 is closed source, meaning that users and companies can't ruin it tailoring it to their own tastes or specific usage.

    Yes it is.

Intelligent humour is very rare but this article is full of it.

In addition, there are no other sites that make the amiga and its suroundings the subject of the satire. So, which sites do you mean particulary? (none obviously)

Well, actually, this article isn't so much satire as telling the bald, naked, shaved, and shivering in the moonlight truth. My apologises for being truthful, I realise you guys just aren't used to it.

Erm, you might want to check your facts. OS 4 uses 32 bit PNG icons, NOT 256 colour - Amiga was using 256 colour icons back in the early 90s - when Windoze was struggling with 16 colours. The priority system in Amiga OS has always been efficient and elegant... I have NO idea what you are referring to. Try using Windows, start encoding video and the mouse pointer stops moving! XP is slightly better, but still stinks of bloatware.

You might want to mention that the only reason PC users ever got "plug and pray" is after Microsoft licences the Autoconfig system from Commodore and then proceeded to stuff it up.

The library and class system used by Amiga OS to track multi thread resources has never been duplicated.

About the only SLIGHTLY intelligent thing you said was there is next to no support or big name software for Amiga OS 4 - you are absolutely right, but then again, it is only a hobby OS for those of us that want a computer that doesnt take 90 seconds to boot (My MorphOS system boots in under 10), looks like it belongs in this century (whoever designed that eyesore XP theme needs their crayolas taken away from them) and runs like it is actualyl plugged in.

If you compare a next generation OS like Amiga OS 4, MorphOS, BeOs etc to outdated patchware like Windows all you are doing is making the crappy look even crappier.

In case you are wondering, yes, I own several X86 systems and am typing this on a Win XP Pro (SP 2) system. For work I MUST use something that is supported in the business world - that is Windoze. But when I want to use a computer that wows my PC owning mates, I use MorphOs or OS4.

One last thing... Windoze and PCs are dirt cheap these days... why do you THINK some of us spend 3 times as much on a system with little software? Try actually using something other than the dire Windows or Linux and you may just find out.

"Erm, you might want to check your facts. OS 4 uses 32 bit PNG icons, NOT 256 colour"

Wrong. It uses a patch to give 32 bit PNG icons. A patch that's a fairly weak copy of the "evil moprhos" way of doing things.

Also, Amiga scheduling may be elegant but it is very limited. Didn't you ever install Executive on your Amiga? I did - it was the only way of getting "proper" multitasking without setting things to Pri=1 and letting them freeze everything else or to Pri=-1 and letting them get frozen. And Executive uses BSD-style feedback scheduling...

While that was quite funny and true on most points it seems like things are 'finally' starting to look up! So enjoy it while you can!

Things are always 'starting to look up' just as there is always 'something big just around the corner'. I don't see any reason for optimism, and even less reason for optimism than there was a year ago.

maps quite well also to MorphOS except that many MOS devs and users already left the scene.

Except? The only reason OS4 users are not leaving the scene is because they already left en-masse in the years it took for OS4 to be released, and the years using Linux on a buggy Teron, before they even got to try OS4.
